A form of protection of children in difficulty, consisting in the temporary placement of a child with a person or family that meets material requirements and has the necessary moral qualities to ensure a proper child development.

What are its goals?
● provide care and ensure the child’s growing in a family environment;
● support, care and development of the child in difficulty, according to his/her age, individuality, and minimum standards of quality;
● facilitate the child’s socialisation and (re)integration with biological, extended, or adopting family and the community;
● reduce the number of children in institutions;
● increase the degree of community involvement in problem resolution.

Child’s placement depending on the reasons why the child needs care can last from several weeks to several years until the child is reunited with his/her biological family, adopted or in rare cases the child stays with his/her foster carer up to 18 years old. If the child has parents, then foster care is accompanied by social support provided to child’s biological parents with permanent communication and cooperation.
The foster carer is selected, assessed and trained.
