The old residential school of Cahul has been transformed into a model placement Centre for children in difficulty
Over 300 thousand lei was donated by people of good will from Moldova to reorganize the residential school.
On Monday, October 12, 2009, the Placement Centre for children in difficulty was launched in Cahul, within the former residential school.
Creation of this Centre was possible due to the project “Reorganization of Cahul residential school”, implemented by EveryChild, in collaboration with Cahul LPA and Ministry of Labour, Social Protection and Family, with financial support from Andreas A David Foundation, as well as from donations made by people of good will in the Republic of Moldova.
The model of reorganization of Cahul residential school is a pioneering one in Moldova, and is to be replicated in other areas across the country, said Stela Grigoras, Director of EveryChild Moldova.
The reorganization process started in the summer of 2007, aiming at transforming the institution into a community social services complex, based on raising children in an environment that is as close to the family and the community, as possible. The placement Centre has room for 30 children, containing six family modules, where children under 16 – orphans or temporarily deprived of parental care - can be placed.
Additionally, on funds raised by EveryChild from foreign donors, the construction of eight social apartments for orphans who graduate from the residential institution started. Besides, a day care centre is to be created.
To support the process of reorganization, in October 2008, the fund-raising campaign “You make the Future” was launched, raising 310 thousand lei. The Campaign will last till January 2010.
We remind, that, since 01 September 2008, EveryChild, along with the institution’s administration, and in close collaboration with the General Department of Education and Youth and the Social Assistance Department, managed to reintegrate all the children from the residential school into community ones. With joint efforts, the reintegration of 50% of children into biological families was achieved. Currently, there are only 75 children in the institution, of 156, who lived there in 2007, when the project started.
